Alfredsson's late goal clinches title


The Ottawa Senators clinched the Northeast Division title despite losing 5-4 in overtime to the Florida Panthers on Thursday night.

Daniel Alfredsson scored with 2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 4 and send the game to OT, earning the Senators the point that clinched the division title.

Joe Nieuwendyk won the game for Florida, scoring 3:30 into the extra period.

Senators center Bryan Smolinski won a faceoff to the right of Roberto Luongo with 3.



Ovechkin scores 51st goal; Caps nip Panthers in shootout


Matt Pettinger beat Jamie McLennan with a low shot in the fourth round of a shootout and Brent Johnson stopped Jozef Stumpel's attempt to give the Caps a 2-1 win over the Panthers.

Panthers 5, Senators 4, OT


Even an overtime loss could not dampen the Senators' jubilation over winning the Northeast Division title.

Daniel Alfredsson scored with 2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 4 and send the game to OT, earning the Senators the point that clinched the division title.

The Senators ended up losing 5-4 to the Florida Panthers.

"It was a big goal and we were pretty excited," said Jason Spezza, who scored his 19th early in the third to draw Ottawa to within 3-2.

The Ottawa Senators look to clinch their second division title in the last three seasons and increase their lead in the Eastern Conference when they host the Florida Panthers.

Ottawa is six points ahead of Buffalo in the Northeast Division and can clinch its fourth division title since 1999 with a win or overtime loss.

Sundin's four goals guide Leafs to OT win over Panthers


Mats Sundin had four goals and two assists and
Tomas Kaberle scored with 11 seconds left in overtime to give the Maple Leafs a 6-5 win.



Maple Leafs gain on eighth playoff spot


Mats Sundin is doing all he can to keep the Toronto Maple Leafs from missing the playoffs for the first time in eight years.

Sundin had four goals and two assists and Tomas Kaberle scored with 11 seconds left in overtime to lead Toronto to a 6-5 victory over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

"We needed that to keep our season alive," Sundin said. "Tampa got beat pretty bad."

Toronto moved within five points of eighth-place Tampa Bay, 6-2 losers to Atlanta on Tuesday night.

Panthers 3, Rangers 2, SO



Two teams with playoff hopes each improved their chances.

Olli Jokinen scored in the third round of a shootout to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Friday night in a game that saw Jaromir Jagr become the NHL's first 50-goal scorer since 2002-03.

Petr Sykora scored for New York in the shootout, but Michael Nylander and Jagr missed. Nathan Horton also scored for Florida and Jozef Stumpel missed.

No Jokinen: Panthers down Bruins



Olli Jokinen scored in a shootout and Roberto Luongo stopped all three Boston attempts in the tiebreaker in the Florida Panthers' 4-3 victory over the fading Boston Bruins on Monday night.

Seemingly out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture a few weeks ago, the Panthers have won six straight and are 9-1-1 in their last 11 to move six points behind seventh-place New Jersey and Montreal. The top eight will make the playoffs.

The Florida Panthers got the bounce they needed in a shootout.

Olli Jokinen scored in the tiebreaker and Roberto Luongo stopped all three Boston attempts in the Panthers' 4-3 victory over the fading Bruins on Monday night.

TIME: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

The Florida Panthers look to match their franchise-record winning streak at seven games, and continue their late push for a playoff berth when they visit a Pittsburgh Penguins team they've beaten 11 straight times.

Florida has moved to within striking distance of the final three playoff spots in the Eastern Conference by winning six straight and nine of its last 10 games.
